Lada is the goddess of Summer, in counterpoint to Marzanna in Polish folktales. As Marzanna dies, Lada is reborn, bringing fertility and Summer harvests. Lada is a top-down 3/4th shawl, large enough to feel like a blanket. Knit in fingering weight yarn, it is lightweight and provides light warmth in the evening Summer breeze, or knit it through the Spring and Summer season in time for the Fall chill as Lada returns to the underworld. Lada was purposely designed with an easy to remember lace pattern and simple construction to allow for an enjoyable, meditative knit.
Techniques to enjoy: simple lace work, stockinette, yo, garter stitch and flat top-down construction.
DETAILS:
Yarn Requirements: Fingering yarn, Colour A: 200 g / 840 m/ 918 yards, Colour B: 73 g / 305 m/ 334 yards, Colour C: 85 g/ 355 m / 388 yards.
Specific Yarn Used in Sample: Colour A: 2 Skeins Brook Farm Fingering #13, Colour B: 1 Skein Brook Farm Fingering #10, Colour C: 1 Skein of Brook Farm Fingering #12.
Needles: 4 mm / Size US 6 80 cm/ 32” circular or longer.
Notions: Stitch Marker, blocking tools and tapestry needle.
Gauge (blocked): 24 stitches x 32 rows = 10 cm / 4” in stockinette stitch.

> This is a top-down construction beginning with lace and working downward.
> Gauge and tension will affect the yardage of the yarn. I have added 10% to the yardage estimates to account for differences between knitters but please note that while gauge is not essential for this pattern, yardage will change if you adapt to your yarn / needle size preferences or otherwise have a different gauge.
> For all the tails that are created from the frequent colour changes in the stripe section, I highly recommend using Stephen West’s technique, the “Weavin’ Stephen” demonstrated here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fz292NAjH2M
> If you do not care for the picot bind-off finish, you can easily replace it with a bind-off of your choice, noting that yardage requirements may change as a result.
> Some knitters may use markers to separate each repeat of the lace chart. If you do this, please be aware that on Row 11 of the chart, you will have to move the marker to account for the SK2P decrease as it will otherwise throw off the stitch count in between each set of markers.
